Benefit's They're Real! Mascara Review

Welcome to my very first mascara review! Let me start off by saying that when I first became interested in makeup, I swore off high end mascaras. They seemed completely pointless to me. Why would I spend $20-$40 on a product I'd be throwing away in six months when I could get that same item for $10 or less at the drugstore? It all seemed like a big scam to me, and I was NOT interested.

Thankfully, I'm a VIB (Very Important Beauty) member at Sephora. It's free to sign up, and you get a neat little card that gets scanned every time you shop there. One of the perks of being a member is you get a free birthday present from Sephora every year, a free sample from one particular brand. This year, the brand was Benefit, and I had never tried anything from them before. I received their They're Real! mascara and their Watts Up! highlighter. So no, I did not pay for this sample myself. However, it was not sent for review, and I am receiving no compensation for writing this, so my opinion is completely unbiased.

Benefit claims this mascara is, "A jet-black mascara that lengthens, curls, volumizes, lifts, and separates lashes for a spectacular 'out-to-here' look." (quote from Sephora.com).

When I opened the mascara for the first time, I was immediately in love with the brush. It's got lots of bristles to really comb through the lashes so there's no clumping. But the coolest part is the tip -- see how there are smaller bristles sticking out of the top? I've never owned a mascara with this unique feature. This makes it MUCH easier to get those baby lashes in the inner corner of the eye, and also makes it easier to add that little extra bit of mascara to the tips of your lashes for added length.

Now, on to the comparison pictures! The picture on the top is my natural lashes with no mascara. The picture on the bottom is my lashes with one coat of the mascara. Since this mascara claims to curl lashes, I did not curl my lashes with my eyelash curler before applying.

BIG difference, right? My lashes clearly have more volume and LOTS of length in the second picture. I was thoroughly impressed with the formula, the feel, the wear time, and the appearance of my lashes. It does offer a slight curl, but my eyelashes are already very curly naturally and don't always need an eyelash curler, so I can't tell you whether or not you would need to curl your lashes beforehand if you have very straight lashes. But overall, this definitely lives up to the claims made in its advertising!

I do have a couple of complaints. The formula is very wet upon application, and it's very easy to get mascara everywhere just by blinking if you're not careful. You have to keep your eye still for a minute or so after application to let the product dry, and I have other mascaras that don't require this extra time. Secondly, this is pretty tough to get off. It takes a good scrub with my eye makeup remover wipes to really get this off, which can't be good for the skin around my eye. It's great in the sense that it keeps the mascara from running -- I got caught in the rain once with this on and it didn't budge, even  though it was pouring -- but it's awful when you're ready to remove it and find that you can't.

A regular size tube of Benefit's They're Real! Mascara retails for $23 USD, and a mini tube can be purchased for $10. If you're new to high end mascara like me, this is a FABULOUS introduction. I will definitely be purchasing a full-size tube when my sample runs out -- I believe I've found my HG mascara at last!

What's your favorite high end mascara? What separates it from the drugstore mascaras you own?

  1. I got this frm Sephora with the highlighter frm benefits as well. I have been using it for a couple of months now. I like it, It works great with my other mascaras when I layer them on but I find that the brush can be a bit harsh on my lashes, the comb really rakes through them.

  2. I was going to do a review on this too! I guess you'll just have to wait and see what I think of it, lol! I love your lashes though - so gorgeous. Mine are very fine and straight, and I neeeeeed an eyelash curler every time.

  3. Really thinking about trying this mascara,a s i already heard so much great things about it. :)

Thanks for linkin up with us in the Friendly Bunch Blog Hop. Have fun hopping and come back next week.

    XoXo, Luchessa.

  4. Your lashes look a lot longer with the high end mascara. :) I'm currently trying out a lash serum that I'm liking. Thanks for sharing!

  5. I got those samples for my birthday at Sephora too, and your assessment is spot-on to how I feel about They're Real!

I love the way the mascara goes on, but I've noticed if I wear it for a few hours it starts to make my eyes feel really heavy and dry.
