Back to the Beginning: My Makeup Story

My makeup story begins a long time ago, when I was a little girl. As you can see from the picture above I was not camera shy, and I was also very girly. But underneath that girly exterior was an insecure girl, with a lot of creativity that didn't have an outlet just yet.

The first piece of makeup I had was one of those big eyshadow and blush sets you used to be able to get at the drug store for children. I remember not knowing how to put anything on, but being so excited to have my own makeup, like my mother did. I smeared it on my face without much rhyme or reason, and when I came out of my room, everyone jokingly said that I looked like a clown. We all laughed it off and my mom helped me wash the chalky colors off my face.

When I got a little bit older, my mom was my official makeup artist. She would put on a little eyeshadow and lipstick on Halloween or to help me get ready for a school dance. Slowly she started teaching me to how to apply makeup myself. I had a powder from Black Radiance that I used to cover all my pimples, which embarrassed me endlessly.

It wasn't until I was about 15 that I really started to take makeup seriously. It was around that time that I started watching YouTube videos that taught me how to apply it, where everything went, and what products might be good for me. My favorites then were Bubzbeauty, Michelle Phan, and Beauty Broadcast. I still watch all three (and many more) today. I remember the hardest thing to learn was applying eyeliner. I was terrible at it and it took me months to be able to do it without thinking. Now it's the easiest and quickest part of my routine.

From that point on, it was full speed ahead. My interest and enthusiasm grew, and a little over a year ago I started this blog. Looking back, it seems like it was meant to be, like my life was naturally leading me in this direction so that I could end up here, with lovely friends and a hobby I adore. I wouldn't trade my experience for anything, and I'm so grateful that my makeup story brought me here.

I tag ALL of you to write about your makeup story on your blog if you haven't already. If you do it please send me a link as I'd love to read them and see how your makeup journey began. :)

  1. Hi Jackie,
I found your blog through the Monday Blog Hop :) my link is
    http://diaryofatrendaholic.blogspot.ca/

My story is rather similar to yours. I was very girly when I was little, it was all about pinks and Barbie. I use to love dolls and my sister and I use to spend hours dressing up our dolls for cocktail parties lol.

I got into makeup when I was about 13 or 14. I didn't really discover YouTube until I was finishing high school so I use to practice and try out different looks on myself. I taught myself a lot and by the time I was 16 I was getting a lot of compliments on my makeup. I went on to pursue a degree in Psychology and studied medicine but I have always been creative at heart so my passion for fashion, makeup and all things beauty never went away hence my blog :)

    1. Hi, Erica!!! I know you, I follow your blog and I'm a big fan. :) I think it's so cool that you got a degree in Psychology and yet you're interested in makeup! I'm a History major studying to be a professor, so my professional life is very different from this as well. Thank you so much for subscribing, and for being the first to comment and share your story. <3

  2. I started using makeup in high school, because it was fun. During college, I grew to love it more and started blogging about makeup a couple years ago. Now, I'm just absolutely loving it as my creative outlet. I have a degree in Business Administration in Finance and Economics *snore* LOL, but I love makeup much much more.

    1. Wow, Finance and Economics? >.< The thought of it makes my head spin, lol. You must be very smart! I'm with you on using makeup as a creative outlet, I don't draw, sing, or dance, so makeup is the main way I express myself. :)

  3. Lovely story - and lovelier picture! I'd love to do this post, but I don't have much of a makeup story :( I was the tomboy all my life, climbing trees, scorning makeup. Until university. That's when I discovered makeup, and became the shopaholic I am today!

    1. Awww, thank you! :) Your story still very much counts as a makeup story, not everyone was girly as a kid. I think it's awesome that you changed your mind about makeup in college and wound up loving it, I have a few friends who were in the exact same situation.

  4. I got one of those big eyeshadow/blush sets when I was younger too! I remember every single day of middle school I would wear bright purple eyeshadow with black eyeliner! O_o I'm so thankful I discovered makeup tutorials on youtube before I went to high school!

    1. Lol, unfortunately I did the purple eyeshadow and black liner in high school! >.< It didn't look half bad, but I wish I knew then what I know now about doing eye makeup.
