Getting Your Glow On: Why Black Girls Need Bronzer, Too

Hello, lovelies! This post is for women of all skin colors and types, but is dedicated especially to my fellow women of color. Be honest with me, how many of you have said one of these phrases at least once in your life?

  • "I'm too dark to wear bronzer, there's no point in buying any!"
  • "Makeup companies don't make bronzers dark enough for women of color."
  • "Why do women of color need bronzer, aren't we tan enough?"
If you're nodding your head in silent approval right now, this is the post for you! Contrary to popular belief, bronzers can make EVERYONE look good. Yes, that means you too! Even if you don't necessarily need a sun-kissed glow, every girl can benefit from a little contouring -- darkening the hollows of your cheeks to make your face look thinner and more chiseled. Doing this can work wonders for the overall look of your skin, and bronzers are just the thing to use to create this effect.

I went to Sephora today and picked up my very first bronzer -- Guerlain Teracotta bronzer in 08 Ebony. It was pricey, but works perfectly for me because it's a few shades darker than my skin tone -- which is hard for me to find, since I'm a deep caramel color. Notice how my cheeks really pop and my face looks thin and defined? That's the bronzer doing its work. I can safely say adding this one extra step changed the entire look of my makeup, and now I can't imagine myself not including bronzer in my routine.

Summer is coming up, and bronzer is one makeup trend that shows up again and again this time of year. If you haven't already, why not give it a try? Maybe you'll start off a skeptic like I did and end up being just as amazed as me.

For those of you already on the bronzer bandwagon, what are your favorite ones to use? How do you like to apply it? Do you have a favorite brush you use?
