High End vs. Low End: Is it Worth the Splurge?

There's a lot of debate in the beauty world about high end and low end makeup, high end being makeup you can find at Sephora, Nordstrom, and other expensive stores, and low end being products you can find at your local drugstore.

Drugstore makeup offers great deals, and lately they've worked hard at keeping up with the high-end makeup trends in order to remain current (BB creams, anyone?). But could you maintain an entire makeup collection that was ONLY drugstore products? Can you get everything you need for cheap and skip the high end brands?

The answer, in my opinion, is no.

I love both high end and low end makeup, and review a fair amount of both on my blog. But while high end is overpriced and sometimes overrated, there are some things that are at a level of quality that drugstore brands can't quite match.

For one thing, the shade selection is MUCH better. I'm African American, as you can probably guess from my pictures, and it's darn near impossible to find a good shade match in drugstore brands 90% of the time. The only one that consistently has colors that work for me is Revlon. Neutrogena, Cover Girl, and Physician's Formula continually come up short, at least in my local CVS.

As far as eyeshadows go, nothing beats the pigmentation and quality of a high end shadow. There are a few gems in the drugstore (Cover Girl to name one), but I'm afraid once I swatched shadows like Lorac and Urban Decay, there was really no comparison.

All that said, I owe a debt of gratitude to my drugstore stash. It keeps me up with makeup trends without having to break the bank, and it's fun to sift through the not-so-great products to find those select few that are high-end quality for a low-end price. So there really isn't any reason to put one on a pedestal and bash the other. Each has their place, each has its hits and misses. And if you're into makeup, I think both belong in your collection.

Let's get a little debate going -- do you prefer high end or low end makeup? Which do you have more of in your collection?

  1. I prefer drustore, however I've been doing lots of research and I might be certain natural high end brands because they don't have harsh chemicals!

  2. Awe I'm a big believer in drugstore brands. Wet n Wild Comfort Zone is one of my favorite palettes, and girlll trust me I have all the Naked palettes as well as all the palettes from the Balm! But I agree with you finding a foundation/powder is a little trickier (I have darker skin as well).

  4. I like a mix of both. I think L'oreal, Revlon and Maybelline are my best bets for Drugstore. Oh and Sleek from the UK. Love their lip, eye and face products. I tend to go high end for foundations but even they never get it just right (woman of colour)Once it works for me I use it :D

  5. I enjoy using both, to be honest. I'm not very picky (except for polish, a little)! I just don't randomly buy from new brands though, I like to read reviews and see swatches first!
